Websites for Coaches Tip: How To Best Structure Your Website
I’ve been asked by a number of fellow coaches in the past week about the setup of their website and how they should best structure it if they’re looking to look after different types of people. So, if they have different focuses, different target markets, what’s the best way to setup the website. So, in this video, I’m going to go through that with you. So, let’s get into it.
Hi, my name is Jamie, founder of Technology for Coaches, and today’s video is all about how to best structure your websites. And funny enough, it’s not really a conversation about websites; it’s more of a conversation about marketing in your business.
What do I mean by that?
Well, in a live call yesterday, with my Q&A group, it was all about what one of the members asked, “Jamie, how do I look after two different target markets on my one website?” I also just got an e-mail in from over in London asking the same question. So, when I hear quite a few questions being repeated, I record a video to try to help more people – that’s what this is.
Now, when I talk about it’s not about websites, per se, it’s about your marketing and about how you approach your business. So, let me talk, use me as an example, so you can see what I’m talking about.
Easier Technology With Technology For Coaches
Now, I have Technology for Coaches as a very specific focus, to help coaches globally to use technology a lot easier or to give them help with technology. The arms and legs, all my team are all super technology whizzes, and they can help coaches in their technology. That’s Technology for Coaches, and that is a very specific stream in my business; so the marketing is all about Technology for Coaches, the language is all about Technology for Coaches, and when you visit Technology for Coaches, assuming you’re a coach and you need help with technology, the language is going to be talking to you. So, that’s Technology for Coaches as one part of my business.
Now, the fundamentals of helping with technology, especially in the automation space, which is what a lot of people come to me for, that’s in automatingyou.com. Now, automatingyou.com takes the same underlying skills in my business and then makes it packaged up for other professions, not just coaching. So then, that’s a marketing conversation of how I can leverage the skills of the marketing and technology automation side that I bring to the world to another group of people outside of coaches. Now, hopefully you can see with that example that I’ve got two different frames of reference, I might have the underlying skills, but I’ve got two different frames of marketing reference, and then they are represented by two different websites.
A Website To Check Me Out…
Now, what also happens with me is people want to check me out, so I have jamiemckean.com, which is the site that people can go to, check me out, and it has my backstory, my about me. What I find is that people will bounce between these sites to do their diligence to check me out, to say, yes, these are all congruent with what Jamie talks about, this is all trying to help people with leverage across all of these points, but underlying is still me.
So, for you, if you’re trying to talk to two different target markets, then likely you are going to want to have two websites, because you’re going to want to have different messages that when someone goes there, when they visit that site, they’ll think this is designed for me. If you try and talk to too many people on one website, it will appeal to no one, okay, it will just wash over the reader because it will just feel like it’s not for them, and they’ll go looking for another sites that’s designed for them. If you are a coach and you need help with technology, Technology for Coaches was designed for you, and the language is designed for you.
Automating Your Business
If you are looking to automate your business using smarter automation for technology in marketing, Automating You is designed for you. So, that’s just an example of the different language with the different websites.
Now, you might say, “Well, Jamie, I’m just starting out, I haven’t got a lot of money to have multiple websites”, and that’s okay. What I would say to you is definitely have a placeholder website for yourself, so name.com if you can get it, or it’s close to that, so jamiemckean.com, and have a website there that talks about you, talks about what you’re trying to do, because people will still want to check you out.
Then second is, when you start having a real focus on a target market, then have a website specific to those people. That means all your language can be specific, all your offers can be specific, all the downloads, all the products, everything can be specific to that type of target market. If you have two that are competing with each other, pick one, focus on one, build up one until the money comes in from one, and then you can fund the second one. Likely, you’ll also be able to fund extra staff to help you as you start to grow your business, and then you’re getting booked solid in this side and you’re super busy, and so then you want to start building more leverage.
So, it’s a phased approach, if you’re starting out. If you’re not starting out and you do have a lot of money coming in today, you want to start looking at segmenting your language, segmenting your websites, so it’s super clear for those who are visiting.
